The Emerging Professionals Committee of AIA Silicon Valley is hosting a free event Saturday, October 20, for kids of all ages to attend and learn about architecture while honing their creative skills.

This educational program was originally created in 1988 by the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara AIA Santa Barbara’s “sister organization” to both connect architects with children and their parents and to acquire appreciation for architecture and the built environment. Now after almost 30 years and much success, Kids Draw Architecture is now being offered at a statewide level. We invite the public to Martin Luther King Jr. Library, in downtown San Jose. Attendees will learn about the structure and the history, be provided all supplies, and meet architects who will help participants sketch the scene.

As architects, sketching is a necessary component of the thought process. But sketching, and art in general, is important for many reasons, and affects how the brain thinks—compartmentalizes, and sees the world. Sketching allows one to focus and see things previously unnoticed in the built environment. The result is a better understanding of the various aspects of architecture – functionality, artistry and importance and demonstrates to our youth that sketching is an imperative honed skill, and that architecture is a functional art.

To that end, we invite all to bring your creativity and your curiosity and come sketch with the architects. All necessary drawing materials will be supplied. This is open to everyone – bring your family and friends!
