2023 Spring Architectural/Landscape Architect Lecture Series

The Stanford University Architect / Campus Planning and Design Office sponsors a spring lecture series in architecture and landscape architecture. The purpose of the series is to bring together community enthusiasts, students and staff from across different disciplines to hear the latest innovations in building and design. The lectures provide the Bay Area architectural and design communities an opportunity to hear nationally and internationally renowned experts in the field. The lectures are free of charge and open to the public.

Theme: Materiality

Since the dawn of the human race, we have harvested the natural materials around us in order to craft shelters that would protect us from the elements.  400,000 years later we have evolved to the point where the choice of building materials in almost limitless, and can be sourced from the other side of the planet if we desire.  We asked our speakers to consider how they approach Materiality in their design process; and what it expresses about program, place, culture and more.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES | CEU’s (1.5 LU Pending Approval)

• Participants will gain knowledge of how the practitioner’s body of work leverages social, political, and cultural context stemming from origins.
• Participants will be able to discuss how the physical context and sensory landscape of the region influences the process and approach of the designer.
• Participants will gain understanding of the interrelationships between architecture, landscape architecture and the immaterial.
• At the completion of this course, participants will have more in depth knowledge of the origins that the architects and landscape architects design style, as well a deeper context of their design detail.
